This cushion, part of the Rabari collection, is handmade for Stitch by Stitch in Gujarat from handwoven organic kala cotton fabric in a smart check pattern. The intricate arches design is embroidered by hand by local women artisans using traditional embroidery chain stitches, reinterpreted for a modern, neutral look. We chose neutral colours and monochrome embroidery so that this piece can fit equally well into a traditional or contemporary interior design scheme.

Kala cotton is an Old World variety of cotton, which is indigenous to the dry Kutch region of India. It is ideally suited to the local ecology, as it thrives on low rainfall, and doesn’t need additional irrigation, pesticides or chemical fertilisers to thrive. Local craftspeople use natural dyes to colour the yarn, and local handloom weavers produce the cloth.
