What makes our Block + Stitch cushions sustainable?

Kala cotton is an ancient, hardy species of cotton which is indigenous to the Kutch region in India.  This area is semi-arid, and gets less than 40cm of rainfall a year.  Despite this, the Kala Cotton Initiative have been cultivating indigenous kala cotton successfully here for a number of years.  The cotton is grown organically, without the need for chemical fertilisers and pesticides, or additional irrigation, which is good for the environment, and also for the livelihoods of the farmers, many of whom have struggled with the financial burden of maintaining crops of thirsty GMO cotton varieties.  Kala cotton is harvested, spun and handwoven locally into beautiful, natural fabrics which we use for many of our cushions and kantha quilts.

As the name suggests, our Block + Stitch cushions are block-printed with “stitches”, and are then embellished by hand with areas of kantha stitching in a contrast colour thread by our talented embroiderers in Gujarat.
