Dulux have named “Brave Ground” their Colour of the Year 2021

Every year, the colour specialists at Dulux, discuss the latest global trends with a panel of international design experts. The findings are then used to choose a colour that reflects the mood of the moment plus a team of top international design experts discuss the latest global trends that will affect every area of our lives. We then translate these insights into one key colour that reflects the mood of the moment.

For 2021, Dulux has chosen a warm, natural neutral called Brave Ground, and we love it!

It’s been dubbed a “Mother Earth” colour by Dulux’s creative director Marianne Shillingford. It is reminiscent of stone and wood and earth. The thinking behind this is that in these times of uncertainty we need colours that are grounding, familiar, soothing, and which reconnect us to the earth and nature. We need to feel calm and secure in order to be brave and courageous for the changes we wish to make in the times ahead.

The beauty of this colour is that it works well with other neutrals, but also with all colours in the spectrum. Marianne refers to it as a “supporting” colour.

Combine with our neutral quilts and throws in shades of grey and cream, or our cushions in chocolate brown and white striped wool. Our monochrome, geometric, charcoal and black Barley and Barton throws will also work well with it.

It also looks great with blues and greens - the colours of nature - but also with stronger, bolder colours such as red or pink, acting as a peaceful background against which brighter colours really sing. Our indigo and Lac red wool cushions and blue organic cotton throws will look perfect with it.

“We need our homes to work much harder for us, to give us what we need, to face that uncertain future.

This is the perfect colour for our time.”

Marianne Shillingford, in an interview with designer Sophie Robinson.
