Kala Cotton Towel Collection

Graham discovered these gorgeous cotton towels on his travels through the Kutch region of Gujarat recently.  Their delicate hand-woven, small-scale striped patterns, and natural colours fit in perfectly with the Stitch by Stitch aesthetic.

The production of these towels involves local farmers, hand spinners, dyers and weavers, bringing together different local economies to create a new product that is also kind to the environment.

Kala cotton is one of the most water-efficient types of cotton in the world.  It can be grown in drought prone regions without the need for large amounts of fertilisers or pesticides.  It's therefore perfect for growing in the Kutch region, and the fact that it is organic, really appeals to us.  We've decided to use Kala cotton in our new Khamir patchwork quilts too - more about these on the blog soon.

Traditional handloom.

Cotton production in Kutch probably traces its history back to the ancient Harappa Civilisation.  The art of hand loom weaving in the area originates with the the Meghwal community from Rajasthan, who migrated to Kutch, bringing with them their traditional weaving skills and art.
